The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on youth mental health. Research shows students are suffering from more depression, more anxiety, more eating disorders, and more suicidal ideation.
Body dissatisfaction has also been on the rise during the pandemic. Felt by 70% of adolescent girls and 40% of adolescent boys, body dissatisfaction contributes to a host of adolescent mental health problems, including eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression, isolation, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation.
BE REAL can help teachers help students with body dissatisfaction and the problems live alongside that, including eating disorders. You can view part of our professional development workshop for schools on How to Create a Body Confident School. Here part of this presentation Denise Hamburger gave at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's eating disorder prevention incubator, STRIPED, in December 2020.
Your educators will learn the following from BE REAL's Body Confident Schools workshop: (1) information on the body image issues young people face today, (2) practical, tested strategies to create a body confident school environment, and (3) about a tested, evidence-based body image curriculum to use in health classes.
For parents, give your schools this link and have them schedule us for a virtual visit to your children's school. We can train your children's teachers.
For teachers, schedule a virtual professional development training for educators at your school or district using this form for inquiries.
