Peace Winds Japan working on promoting gender equality in and around the Karobei Unified Residential Area in Turkana County, northwestern Kenya.
In the world, on average, women spend more than five times as much time doing housework, childcare, nursing care, and other free work as men.
Carobay women are also busy drawing water early in the morning, cleaning laundry, receiving rations, and taking care of children and livestock. They could not rest from morning till night.
In both refugees and host communities, there is a persistent belief that women should do the work of caring for their husbands, children, and homes. Because of the belief, that when we promote sanitation projects including toilet construction, proper use, and handwashing, all these works be on women.
To improve the recognition, we work with local health and leaders to analyze the roles of men and women in everyday life among residents based on real-life, to create and implement action plans in groups to ease the burden on women and help families live better.
Little by little, a South Sudanese refugee woman living in Karobei happily said,
"Before I joined my husband in this activity, he never participated in raising children, but recently he has been helping me play with my children and clean up after meals."
In addition, Peace Winds Japan keeps working on a project which supports women's participation in economic activities.
The project has been operating with UN Women's Organization (UN Women)since October 2021, supporting women's groups in making sanitary napkins, and constructing nursery rooms at craft association centers.
We will continue to work with the local people, aiming to create a society in which both women and men can make use of their abilities to be active.
Thanks for your support as always.
