Ranjita, 23yrs old from Karajigi in Haveri District is blind since birth. Her brother is the only breadwinner at home and her younger sister is also blind since birth.

Both sisters didn’t let blindness put them down, instead they built their talent in different areas. They were utilizing every opportunity to groom themselves and grow further. Sooner after getting to know about Mitra Jyothi and the enablement programs driven for Visually Impaired, they enrolled for the computer training. Though they learnt few basic concepts at school, Ranjitha felt Mitra Jyothi training helped her to gain in depth knowledge and now she can use computers without hindrance through screen reading softwares.

On asking about her hobbies, she seemed very enthusiastic and answered by saying that her hobbies were reading story books. She said that she likes songs and devotional stories and often listens to both. When she got to know about the digital media (Dotbook like devices) available to read braille books, she was so excited. She stated that this device and her computer knowledge will help her to achieve her aspiration in life. At the same time her thirst to read books as well will get fulfilled since she can read all digital books via braille media using this device.

On asking about her future plans, she said that he wants to continue studying and enroll for M.A in History and become a History Lecturer as she really likes History and wants to be able to teach it.

Main objective of the project is to provide braille laptop to students with any kind of visual disability (from low vision and complete blindness to people at risk of losing vision with time) from economically backward and marginalized communities to promote reading and literacy.

Dotbook will help Visually Impaired students to be on par with other kids and plays a vital role in inclusive education. With GlobalGiving project we are planning to procure the Dotbook laptop and distribute to students from marginalized community. We are yet to receive required funds to procure Dotbook braille refreshable device as per plan.

Self-reading helps Visually Impaired people to improve their vocabulary and develop communication skills. Most of the Visually Impaired people lack in spellings and we are sure that the device can help to learn and to be in par with other sighted students.
