The new year is finally here, and with it comes new goals and projects!
Can you believe that we have been in Bela Bela now for almost 2 years!!
In the last report we were busy with the Genet's new enclosure, we are happy to say that on Christmas Eve the enclosure was completed and were wer able to move Willow and Ember outside! They were naturally cautious at first but later that night we observed them having the time of their lives" Exploring, climbing and running around, it is so rewarding to see!
We also got the chance to release an adult genet that had been kept in poor conditions as a pet. Initially he was kept in an enclosure in order for us to observe his behaviour and assess his suitability for release. When all the signs pointed to sucess, we soft released him in the bush on our farm. Soft release means that we still provide food and shelter, while allowing him the freedom to come and go as he wishes. He was soon ready for the wild, took his last meal with a thanks and ran off to live wild and free!
The lion boys - Napoleon and Acinonyx have been enjoying their new platform, built to replicate their old platform back in Bloemfontein. Before the platform was even completed and had a roof both of the boys took ownership and have been laying on it consistantly ever since!
Our hands have also been full with some unexpected vet trips and visits! First Buttercup our 10 years old rescued pygmy goat fell seriously ill with Heartwater disease, it took several vet trips and a lot of care and dedication to pull her through. Next we called in the vet to attend to Napoleon the lion's ingrown toe nails, after his manicure he is feeling much better! Lastly Maxy the caracal had to have emergency surgery after a piece of a ball that he ate way back in Apil last year became stuck in his intestines! Maxy is still under intensive care, requiring staff to check on him every 2 hours throughout the day and night! We hope and pray that this is the end to the vet treatment and that all of the animals stay happy and healthy!
In addition we are still pushing to complete the new volunteer village, the kitchen area is almost complete, as are the rooms, We are just waiting on some quotes and materials to complete the lounge area and solar systems!
We cannot wait to show you all that we are in the process of completing and everything that has been achieved with your help and support!!
Thank you to each and every person who generously makes donations that help us keep moving forward!
