The Before I Die Wall and Celebration of Life Festival at the Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic, Mexico was a success because you cared enough to donate. Thank you.
We joyfully integrated the Mexican and expat members of our community for multiple events. The installation of the bi-lingual Before I Die Wall began the Celebration. Ten days later it is nearly covered in dreams. Reading the words on it is a spiritual experience.
On movie day, the award-winning films, “The Book of Life” and “Beetlejuice “were shown to children at our Wilkes education center. Later a Halloween costume party was held with a dozen exciting games, face painting and trick or treating. It drew over 110 kids from many neighborhoods.
An inspiring public presentation called “How to Live Forever” made everyone grateful for being alive at all.
The finale was a Celebration of Life mourning service. 300 white luminaria bags with the names of loved ones no longer with us lined the paths around the campus, creating the sense of walking through a cemetery. Three faith leaders spoke eloquently about the meaning of death in life. A musical performance was enjoyed with traditional pan de muertos and chocolate milk. Poems were read.
A procession led by a catrina and her violinist carried baskets of memorial cards bearing the names of loved ones while walking through a cloud of bubbles with music playing softly. The cards were then set on fire, lighting the night of All Souls Day. Sadness and joy were married.
