Stingless Beekeepers Building Together: Early 2025

2025 is off to a strong start for stingless beekeepers in the Peruvian Amazon, with honey harvests, association gatherings, and hands-on exchanges between Maijuna and Kichwa communities raising native bees!

In January, Maijuna beekeepers gathered for their association’s annual congress, during which members elected a new board to lead their growth in the coming years. Beekeepers also debated next steps for documenting cultural bee knowledge and rebranding their honey, shared updates on last year’s achievements, made commitments as associates, and charted the course for the year ahead during the two-day summit.

In February, 70 Kichwa beekeepers visited the Maijuna communities of Puerto Huamán and Nueva Vida to see firsthand how their neighbors to the east have been working with stingless bees for over six years. Some traveled more than twelve hours along the Napo River to reach the Maijuna communities. Maijuna hosts demonstrated advanced practices in colony division, hive care, and sustainable honey harvesting. Participants exchanged medicinal knowledge, lessons learned in beekeeping, and reflections on how keeping bees support their families as well as forest conservation.

Beekeepers also kicked off the season’s honey harvest! After low yields last year due to the El Niño phenomenon, beekeepers are thrilled to see recovery in this season’s harvest – and so are the many people who seek out the native bee honey in Iquitos. The Maijuna’s recent focus on keeping a greater diversity of bee species has led to the greatest variety of honey available in the city.

We are looking forward to sharing even more stingless bee news with you this year and are grateful to be on this journey together. Thank you for your support of this Indigenous-lead biocultural conservation initiative.
