Greetings from HERD!!
Nine months have passed since Khanyisa was found and rescued from the ghastly snare. She was found all alone with no sign of her family.
It took almost three months for her severe wounds around her mouth, cheeks and ears to fully heal. After that we started her integration with the new family, the Jabulani Herd.
Khanyisa has come leaps and bounds since then, and recently celebrated her 1st birthday too! Followers from all around the world joined in to celebrate this milestone that represented hope and inspiration for so many people that have followed her journey of recovery since January.
Our most recently weigh-in comes in at 277KG, a recent healthy gain of 7KG after stagnating for some time.
During the day Khanyisa joins the herd in the wild of the reserve, foraging and learning from them continually. Currently, she still spends her evenings in the orphanage nursery - but the next step will be to join the herd in the stables full time, once we are 100% she will not need any human assistance during the nights for additional milk feedings etc. We will continue to provide her with her milk formula until such time she is fully weaned (approximately four years old).
We are heading now into summer, and have just received some fantastic rains, and looking forward to a greener landscape in the coming weeks and months.
Thank YOU for supporting HERD and Khanyisa. We rely solely on public funding to do the work we do.
All our very best,
Adine, Sue and Team HERD.
