3 Generations’ is committed to indigenous peoples and their struggles to protect their communities, lands and traditions. That is why we created the Ayni Relief Fund. We recently had the opportunity to speak with Puma Quispe and he updated us on how the relief effort in Chinchero is going.
Your support and solidarity has allowed the people of Chinchero to withstand the pandemic. The community continues to buy food and educational supplies for the village which is a great help to the vulnerable elders and children. WIFI has been set up throughout the village and now the district is in the process of building a Computer Center for the children to allow them to complete their education online.
The situation in Peru has improved and the country is slowly reopening. Tourism however is still at a standstill and the artisan craftspeople are unable to sell their products in their villages and markets. It will be a long difficult path of recovery for all the halted businesses and there will be many economic challenges for the people that live a day-by-day life. The tourism Industry and jobs that are linked directly with artisan crafts have been greatly affected by COVID-19. The social distancing process is threatening thousands of families who have this as their main source of income. Our Chinchero community has been greatly affected as 60% of our village is Artisans and 95% of their sales is made possible by tourists.
So far, there haven’t been any vaccines available in Chinchero and the community will continue to be vulnerable to Covid-19 until they are.
