Hiking, Helping, and Hitting new Heights!

Seeing new sights at sunset

As we wrapped up 2024 and launched into an exciting new year, Aventureros continued to grow, explore, and make a meaningful impact in the community! From conservation efforts to creative projects and cultural exchanges, the kids have been busy learning, leading, and giving back.

There was an exciting series of Friday evening sunset hikes for beginners and families. These participants enjoyed great company, learned more about their landscape, and saw some gorgeous sunsets! The program also hosted an overnight backpacking trip to an abandoned mine just before Christmas for the more experienced hikers.

Claire and Meghann organized a gift drive for the kids, inviting community members to sponsor a child with a gift. The community came together, and we had an incredible posada (holiday gathering) with 54 Aventureros, ages 3-19, and a special gift under the tree for each one!

At the posada, we also welcomed back Lucy, for a special five-week winter internship, made possible by a generous grant from Conservation Nation. She fully immersed herself in Aventureros, participating in every activity and bringing new energy to the program. Thanks to this support, Lucy also provided a lasting gift—donating musical instruments (including ukuleles, a keyboard, and a tambourine) and teaching the kids how to get started with music lessons. She also worked diligently with them on English practice, making a meaningful impact throughout her stay.

In the new year, the kids helped organize a massive community cleanup removing a staggering 850 kg, or 1873.92 lbs, of garbage! They also hosted two successful spaghetti dinner fundraisers and celebrated Valentine’s Day with a fun, creative picnic filled with snacks and sweet treats.

Concerning research and skill building, they have been focusing on seabirds, sea turtles, and leadership. The kids continue to practice and improve on their English skills as well.

They also had the privilege of hosting a Mayan shaman for two days, where they experienced interactive demonstrations about his culture and traditions. Looking ahead, they are diving into a brand-new project—launching their very own podcast, “AventuLovers”! Stay tuned as they use this platform to share their stories, insights, and passion for conservation with the world.
