Supporting Families Virtually in the midst of Covid19 Pandemic

ATP LIVE Independence Day Special
ATP LIVE Independence Day Special

The year 2020 has been quite a challenging one for everyone globally and for us as well at the Ask The Paediatricians Foundation. FWe have to make the painful decision to cancel our usual October independence day community outreaches as a result of the pandemic. Most schools in Nigeria are still closed and social distancing measures recommended by government as a means of controlling the pandemic will be quite challenging in an outreach. We however celebrated the Independence day with a special edition of ATP LIVE on health and welfare of our children.

Notwithstanding this challenge, Ask The Paediatticians Foundation has continued to support parents and children via our online facebook group. The Facebook group has continued to grow and we currently have over 653,000 members and we answer about 1000 questions from parents weekly. Many members continue to give feedback how the group has been a saving measure for them during the pandemic as a reputable source of genuine health information. Our ATP family Facebook group for adults now has over 50,000 members in 2 years and has been supporting parents on their own health issues.

ATP also participated in the first virtual Facebook Communities Summit in October 2020 involving many communities on Facebook globally and I was previleged to be one of the speakers on keeping communities safe from misinformation. It was an honour to share with other community leaders how we have been using different resources provided by Facebook and our own monitoring in providing evidence-based information while keeping misinformation out of the group especially when it relates to health of children; we cannot afford the danger that misinformation will cause.

Apart from the Facebook channel; we have continued our online health education via other social media platforms including our YouTube and Instagram channels where we upload short health education videos daily. Many people found these videos and posts very informative and supportive in ensuring good and appropriate health care for their children. We have also embarked on the update of our ATP mobile app so as to increase its user-friendliness and ensure that subscribers get the best out of the app which now has more than 4000 subscribers on Android and Apple.

Despite putting an hold on physcial outreaches, we continue to develop and prepare ourselves to reach more children in 2021. We are currently building our human resource and funding capacity. We welcomed our 2020 new interns - 12 of them who as beneficiaries of ATP our group and are now ready to contribute their own quota to growth and impact of ATP. We are so excited about their optimisim and passion. One of them is from Ghana and she is quite passionate about launching our Ghana chapter and we look forward to having our first outreach beyond Nigeria as we launched into the rest of Africa. We have also launched fundraising campaigns to see our members comitted to giving regularly to ATP from as low as N100 monthly. We look forward to your continous support and are immensely grateful to those of you who have been consistently supporting us. To say thank you to you all our regular donors; we will be giving a gift of free online course to any donor with a gift of N10,000 or more from October to the end of 31 December 2020.

We look forward to the end of the global pandemic and resumption of our global outreaches. Thank you so much for your support.
