Over the past months, we have been busy working on producing an Inga Alley Cropping video which shows steps on how to establish an inga plot.
Inga Alley Cropping aims to reduce deforestation and fire use by making existing plot more productive. Inga trees are leguminous meaning that they fix nitrogen in the soil. Inga trees create a think blanket of mulch on the ground as it grows and suppress fast growing weeds. Additional Inga trees hold the top soil in place. The trees are then pruned after a two year establishment to grow annual crops such as corn, bean, tomatoes, pineapples and black peppers, just to name a few.
This video will be widely shared among the farmers which we work with within the Maya Golden Landscape. This along with extension support from our team will strengthen the establishment of more productive, sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices in the Maya Golden Landscape of southern Belize.
