Give 190 children a chance to thrive please!

By Donatien NDIZEYE | M&E Leader

Stunting remains a significant public health issue in Rwanda, particularly in rural areas. It is a result of chronic malnutrition, often caused by inadequate diets, nutrient deficiencies, and persistent infections. This condition affects children's physical and cognitive development, undermining their potential for a healthy future.

In response to this challenge, this project aims to provide comprehensive nutritional support to 190 stunted children in two sectors of the Eastern Province, Rwanda, over six months. The project includes dietary intervention, household support with egg-producing chickens, and nutrition education for sustainability.

Project Objectives

  1. To improve the nutritional status of 190 stunted children through the provision of balanced diets.
  2. To equip 190 households with three egg-producing chickens each to ensure a sustainable source of protein and income.
  3. To educate families on nutrition and hygiene practices to prevent malnutrition and related health issues

Implementation Plan

  1. Provision of Balanced Diets:
  • Develop a meal plan rich in growth-promoting nutrients (proteins, vitamins, and minerals).
  • Source and distribute fresh, locally available food items.
  • Monitor children's growth monthly to assess the impact.

       2. Household support with Chickens:

  • Provide three high-yield egg-producing chickens per household.
  • Train families on chicken rearing, feeding, and egg harvesting for optimal production.

       3. Nutrition Education:

  • Conduct community workshops on balanced diets, meal preparation, and hygiene practices.
  • Disseminate informational materials on the causes and prevention of stunting.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved growth and health indicators for 190 stunted children.
  • Enhanced food security and sustainable protein sources for 190 households.
  • Increased awareness and practice of good nutrition and hygiene among community members.

Challenges

This project is yet to be implemented due to a lack of sufficient funds. Without immediate intervention, the targeted children remain at risk of severe health complications associated with stunting.

Call to Action

We are appealing to well-wishers, organizations, and donors to financially support this initiative. Your contributions will make a transformative impact on the lives of these children and their families, creating a healthier, more resilient community.

Conclusion

Investing in this project is investing in the future of 190 children and their households. By addressing the root causes of malnutrition, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and poor health in the two sectors of Eastern Province, Rwanda. Together, we can give these children a chance to thrive.

Thank you, and we wish you a Happy New Year!
