Summary

This project will provide affordable, life-enhancing disability aids (standing frames, chairs, toys etc) for at least 50 children in Pakistan in the first year via Appropriate Paper-Based Technology (APT) training. With production increasing to reach 200 children annually in 3 years' time, this project will offer employment to locals. Replacing wood with biodegradable recycled materials minimises environmental impact. Trainees will learn eco-friendly techniques which are resource efficient.

Challenge

Disability is a significant challenge in Pakistan. According to statistics from the World Health Organisation (2023), a significant portion of Pakistan's population faces various forms of disability, affecting their daily lives and overall wellbeing. Access to education, healthcare, and jobs is often limited for people with disabilities, leading to exclusion and marginalisation. Often the poorest have no access to disability equipment that would be life changing and life enhancing.

Solution

APT built equipment has been shown to improve functional ability of children with disabilities, improve their involvement & interaction in daily-life situations, and reduce the family's burden of care. We will train 10 people in one year to produce this life-changing and much needed APT equipment. This will lead to more APT workshops being set up; more trained individuals; increased availability and better quality of equipment for vulnerable children; and local income generation.

Long-Term Impact

Within 3 years, at least 350 children with disabilities will benefit from crucial adapted furniture, mobility aides, therapy equipment and other assistive devices. This will increase as more people are trained. Our project promotes sustainable economic empowerment by imparting income-generating APT skills to local people. We ensure lasting impact through local skill retention and skill sharing in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, so the expertise stays in these communities for the long term.
