July Report (COVID-19)

By Rory Hamilton | Marketing & Communications Officer

Most fundraising activities for the Memorial Fund have been put on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Luckily we were able to get the RTI challenge in just before most of the world went into lockdown - and just as well as the team smashed the record they aimed to beat, and raised over £10,000 in doing so!

We reported on our website back in March:

"Congratulations to the team who smashed the world record, and powered past the SG $200,000 mark in the AON Singapore 2020 Round the Island Challenge on 13-14th March 2020. A group of senior executives from across the Asian (and some further afield) insurance industry came together to set a Singapore Record, circumnavigating Singapore in 3 outrigger boats, and raising money to support children's projects across Asia in partnership with the Nicholson Memorial Fund and Atlas Asia."

The team even managed to feature in national newspapers and make a world record entry!

Since then, everyone has tried their best in the wake of the difficult circumstances to continue the enormous efforts that have been the theme of the ANMF up until now. First there was the RAF Police Rugby Team's Around the World in 7 Days Challenge which saw a collective effort from the whole Atlas family, as well as many more, come together to raise money to help kids in with food vouchers, masks and other essential provisions. Special mention to Fiona who racked up over 70 miles per day, on her own! The money they raised is being used to support migrant workers living in dormitories in Singapore, in terrible cramped conditions and basic rations.

Upcoming in the next few days was meant to have been the Race to the Stones in Wiltshire, UK, but this has been moved to a virtual event and the team just got their shipment of AN/Atlas branded kit for their home efforts - good luck guys! The 'Race to the Stones' is a 100 kilometer challenge (50K on Saturday 4 July, 50K on Sunday 5 July).

The money raised will go to projects which promote three key themes :

  1. Projects that promote equality of opportunity for girls;
  2. Projects that support children with physical and/or intellectual disabilities;
  3. Projects that use rugby as a hook to engage disadvantaged children and support personal development and education.

We visited Sri Lanka in December of last year to evaluate how best we can enact the above to help underprivileged children there.
