The last three months we have made considerable progress in our efforts to support communities inside the Aquicuana Reserve. We made advancements in a running water project for the community San Jose and we've started to source materials for our research station build.
In the community San Jose, we drilled 60-meters deep to access a clean/abundant water source. We built an 8-meter high platform to support a 5000 liter water tank. The water grid is spread out over 800 meters of underground tubing, with 5 distribution points strategically located throughout the community. The project is now functional, proving easily accessible, clean drinkable water. Community members no longer need to travel long distances to access their water and water borne diseases will be reduced drastically, especially in young children. Environmental degradation of existing above ground water sources will also decline considerably.
The project still requires some additional work, including the sourcing of a solar powered water pump. We purchased a gasoline powered generator for the community to power the pump; however this is not sustainable. For anyone interested in donating we will create a separate GlobalGiving campaign to fully complete this project and expand the water grid/ distribution points.
In late August we have a group visiting from the Unites States which will support the research station build. Our goal is to frame and roof the research station by the end of September. We still do not have the funding to complete the project; however, we are excited to make significant progress. The station will be key in our efforts to understand the reserve, its inhabitants, and its threats. With this information we will solicit the government to expand the size and scope of the reserve. Additionally we are hoping these efforts will also assist in obtaining park rangers to enforce rules and ensure safety for all reserve inhabitants.
Our work has been delayed by the coronavirus but we are making significant progress. We are excited about the second half of 2021 and extremely grateful for of our international community of supporters. We encourage all our supporters to reach out and stay involved in our efforts. Thank you and we will be in touch.
