The Amazon Burning - Kids and Bugs to the Rescue!

After the incredible success of our fundraising campaign last year which gave us our permanent spot in GlobalGiving, we wanted to thank you again and update you on how things have been. As you know, our work focuses on insects in the Amazon, with one part related to research and the other to education. Your donations are helping us continue this work!

For our research project, we’ve been able to fund three residency positions focused on butterflies and moths. All three of them are Peruvian undergraduates. Our program offers them the ability to come here and learn lepidoptera research techniques while also contributing to the work we do. We are also happy that we’ve been able to get new equipment including everything we use for collecting butterflies and other insects. Our current interns are using these materials and we’ll be able to continue researching throughout the year. A plus is that our lab looks much nicer now!

In terms of the environmental education project, this year we are focusing on butterflies and moths.  We’ll be guiding children through a series of activities showing the life cycle and ecology of some of the most incredible butterflies you can find here. So far, we have almost finished the creation of all the art and educational contents for the project. We’ll be printing all the materials by April and start working with schools in May. This year we hope to reach 1,500 kids, all thanks to you!
