MAIZE GROWING UNDER COSMA SUPPORTED GROUPS

Cosma is an organization aimed at improving life styles of farmers in rural areas mostly women and youth who gather and form small Savings groups ie the Village cooperatives (VCs)

Cosma improves standards of people in VCs through a number of field activities it provides ie soft loans with low interest of 2% and provision of maize seeds and market of farm produce

MAIZE PROJECT

Last planting season Cosma gave out hybrid maize seed namely;                         long 5 among it’s group members ie Agali awamu  Nakasenyi , Vunza Twekulakulanye  Women’s group  among 15 others  in August with agronomy advise .   

We gave out 515kgs of maize seeds expecting them to return 10% of their harvest which 5150 kgs ofmaize which is 10% of their harvest to Cosma to enable us sell and buy seeds for the next season. Due occurrences like drought and poor germination our farmers returned 3312 kgs representing 64% as the table below elaborates, On top of this 10% return, Cosma has invested in providing market the rest of harvested maize to enable farmers generated good income as well as helping Cosma generate sustainable income .

  • Farmers have got food since maize is source of food
  • Project has provided job to both farmers and agronomists
  • Maize project has uplifted the standards of living among farmers since maize is source income
  • It has created good financial,and social security in the community
