The Mango Tree Orphan Support Trust Kenya plans to complete its existing farmers' training center and additional hostels. We will build silo storage for grains and purchase a tractor for cultivation and transport. Cold storage, cottage-industry size processing plants for honey, fruits and peanut butter will be installed. A digital based farmers' information management system and resource center will be developed and mobile-phones linked for timely feedback and information dissemination.
The farmers in Homabay County, Kenya have been supported to attain food security over the last 5 years. They care for HIV orphans and vulnerable children in an area with high poverty levels. To venture into agribusiness, we formed a farmers' cooperative with 1500 members and built a training center to 80% completion in 2017. We require $50000 to complete and equip the center. The project will reduce dependence on TMT-K for education support from the current 60% to 20% of our annual budget.
We will improve farmers' production and income by completing the farmers training center, building silo storage for dry grains and purchasing a tractor for cultivation and transport. Fish and fruits will be kept fresh in cold storage facilities and value added to honey, fruits and peanuts using cottage-industry size processing plants. We will monitor weather and obtain relevant farming and marketing information then disseminate through mobile phones linked to a digital information platform.
The project will create a vibrant agribusiness community center and empower 1500 farmers, 70% being women. Farmers will earn regular income, enabling them to provide for their families' and improve OVC's health, education and general well-being. The project will incorporate OVC alumni during implementation and sustainability planning. This will reduce poverty, illiteracy and unemployment levels in Homabay County, Kenya by transforming the lives of 6000 individuals.
