Schooling, School+Plus and Covid-19
Like many places around the world, Nepal is in lockdown during the current pandemic and that means schools and our School+Plus program are also closed.
We have however adapted, and are meeting this challenge by providing home schooling for the 20+ kids in the IGWR houses and providing essential support (food and educational resources) to those kids locked down at home with family situations that hove no income due to lack of work in the current situation,
Here’s a brief report on the current situation from Raja in Nepal:
“Currently our older kids are taking classes from 9 am to 11 pm and from 1 pm to 4 pm in house one. The official schoolbooks are not available yet but still we are helping the students in all subjects’ math, science, social, Nepali, computer, and English. We are also helping them with handwriting, spelling, and reading better. Each class is 30 minutes and our House 2 and 3 kids are running the in-home school.”
The prices of many essential supplies have increased due to the changing economy caused by Covid-19 and we’re doing the best we can to keep up supplies to the kids and families this project has been supporting.
Home schooling also provides us with some new challenges; our older students need access to computers for online study and the smaller kids need school supplies and tuition.
Our team in Nepal, guided by Raja, are doing a wonderful job: in IGWR houses 2 and 3 all Herald students are taking regular online classes and others are getting ready for exams. And one of former teacher of NIBS school is giving 2-hour special tuition to our year 10 students every day.
Project Budget and Financial considerations
When we started this project around 18months ago we had a budget of $15,000 and since that time we’ve helped many children from families that needed support in order to give their kids the opportunities most of us have enjoyed.
Now in 2020 we’ve updated our budget to provide a full School+Plus program and that requires a $31,000 commitment.
However due to Covid-19, we are now running in an ‘emergency relief mode’ and much of our funding will be used to support the changing circumstances associated with the pandemic.
The new project target shown on the GG project page reflects the following:
2019 School+Plus Budget $15,000
2020 School+Plus Budget $31,000
Covid-19 Relief Budget $15,000
Total $61,000
And we intend to use funds raised in the current situation to provide the following support for the kids in Nepal:
Home Schooling for 20+ children in IGWR Houses
Tuition fees for year ten students
Tuition fees for primary students
Purchase of Computer equipment for home schooling
School supplies/stationery
Food & Essential supplies for families of students with no income.
How much of my money actually goes to the kids who need it?
Many charities have high administration costs, and certainly in Nepal many are quite corrupt in their use of donor funds.
IGWR-Nepal is supported by IGWR Inc. a registered Australian Charity that is run by volunteers and that has no administration costs, except for bank charges and audit fees.
99.52% of all monies donated goes directly to the operations of IGWR-Nepal
All site visits to Nepal are self-funded by the volunteers visiting, and these visitors are always inspired by the team in Nepal and amazed at what they can achieve with each dollar donated. Our GlobalGiving projects do incur a 10% processing fee, however this is balanced by the matched giving days and extras that come from the GG programs.
