A word after a word after a word...is power

Dear Maitri Friend,

It has been an exciting quarter for our Afterschool Programme. we continued to hold After-school classes for children from low-income communities in two co-locations. The students we have are aged five to sixteen. Our teachers are able to give them individual attention, which they don’t normally get in school because of bigger size of the classes. Our overall goal is to enhance their understanding, better their academic performance and enrich their holistic development.

One book, One Pen, One Child can change the world

You will be happy to know that now; the children of our AfterSchool Programme have a library with different set of books and board games. The students were always curious and were impatiently waiting for the inauguration. The children along with boys of the Doon School performed enthusiastically in the inauguration function

Students will be taken to the library once week, so they can practice English and expand their vocabulary. Students will be allowed to read the books in the library for an hour after which the students will be taken to their respective classes. Students were eagerly wait to explore the book in the library. They have shown a lot of enthusiasm to read the books in the library.

A Talent Show

A Talent show was organized by a Maitri intern from the University of Utah, United States at Maitrigram ARD school. She conducted the talent show on 27 th of July, which was the last day of her internship at school. All the students participated in the talent show by engaging in different activities like dancing,
singing, drawing and reciting a poem. At the end of the talent show, all the students received a certificate of achievement for their effort.

Celebrations

Yoga Day Celebration : Yoga Day is used to celebrate to make the people to get them every kind of knowledge and information about the facts and effects of Yoga on the health of the people. Yoga gives the people much more calmness and peace with lots of Confidence and Courage to the people by which they can do many of the activities in a better way.  On the International Yoga Day, June 21, Maitri hosted a 2 hour children’s yoga celebration in the Maitri School twenty underprivileged children attended the program. Every child participated in this event with great excitement and the event was really helpful for all the participants. Certificates were also given to all the participants of Yoga Day Celebration.

Celebration of Birthday: Nehansh is a student who celebrated his birthday with other students at Maitrigram on 14 th of July by cutting the cake and distributing gifts to the students. Nehansh came to Maitrigram with his family and friends. Our students had a great time interacting with Nehansh and his family. Students at Maitrigram appreciated the gifts and cake. Komal and Pallivi (students at Maitrigram) had their birthday on 14 th of July as well. Komal and Pallavi enjoyed celebrating their birthday along with Nehansh. Students from Maitrigram thanked Nehansh and his family  and gifted him a handmade birthday card.

Celebration of Independence Day: All children of Maitrigram gathered together to celebrate Independence day. Our children performed skits promoting tolerance and solidarity. Our children also took part in dance performances organized by another intern placed from the University of Utah.

Sam(name changed) is a 13 years old student also is studying in class 8. Originally from Jharkhand, he comes from a modest household where his father is a driver and mother is a housewife. His parent’s ambition for a better education on for their son saw brought him to Delhi. He has been a part of Maitri since last 2 years. His teachers have noticed his hard work and sincere nature. His grades have also improved and been consistent since the time he has joined. He has also been awarded with a scholarship along with uniform, a School bag, books and pen, Maitri believes that one book, one pen, one child can change the world.

Such celebrations and activities are crucial for the overall development of a child.  Surprisingly, Children of Maitrigram have rather added new feathers to the spirit of these celebrations. You have helped us provide such a space to the children of Maitrigram.
