Adult Prisons in Cambodia - No Place for a Child

Our innovative program, "This Life Without Bars" (TLWB), offers a life-changing alternative to incarceration for young people who have made poor choices. By focusing on community-based solutions, education, and personal development, we help these vulnerable youth avoid the devastating consequences of Cambodia's overcrowded prison system.

The Harsh Reality for Cambodian Youth
Imagine being a child, trapped in an adult prison, your future slipping away. Sadly, this is the reality for approximately 1,800 children in Cambodia. Poverty, homelessness, limited education, and few opportunities often lead these young people down a troubled path. But we know there's a better way.

Our Approach: Diversion, Support, and Empowerment
TLWB actively promotes diversion and alternatives to imprisonment. Our dedicated team works hand-in-hand with social agents, judges, local authorities, parents, juveniles, rehabilitation centres, and schools to support children's rehabilitation within their communities.

From June to August 2024, we handled 68 cases of juvenile conflict with the law, providing comprehensive support:

• 13 cases diverted to drug treatment
• 17 Social Inquiry reports submitted to judges
• 3 juveniles received regular monitoring for successful diversion
• 11 cases received reintegration support post-rehabilitation
• 24 families assisted with prison and rehabilitation visits
• 30 families received emergency food packages
• 12 children received school materials
• 28 families received counselling on legal matters and living conditions
• 2 families supported in business planning for income generation

Systemic Change Through Education and Advocacy
We are not just transforming individual lives; we're driving systemic change. In August 2024, we shared our program practices with 73 key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice, judges, prosecutors, prison officers, police, and NGO partners. By showcasing the effectiveness of alternatives to incarceration and community-based support, we aim to increase the use of diversionary measures and help more juveniles successfully reintegrate into society.
