Wetland paddy cultivation remains the primary agricultural activity in the watershed areas of Kerala’s rivers. However, due to challenges such as climate change, labor shortages, and overexploitation, this sector has faced severe economic losses and ecological degradation. Traditionally, farmers have played a crucial role in maintaining the water circulatory systems of these regions. However, with the decline in farming activities, small rivulets and streams (1st to 3rd order) have been neglected, leading to their near disappearance. This has caused significant damage to freshwater ecosystems, contributing to drinking water shortages and disrupting local food production.
TIES Intervention and Impact
Recognizing the urgency of restoring Kerala’s wetland paddy cultivation and freshwater ecosystems, TIES has implemented a multi-faceted approach to support farmers and rehabilitate critical water systems. A key focus has been the restoration of 1st to 3rd order streams, which play a crucial role in sustaining paddy fields and local water supplies. Many of these small water channels have been neglected, leading to severe disruptions in natural water flow. TIES has worked closely with farmers to map and restore these streams, remove blockages, and implement eco-friendly measures to prevent soil erosion and maintain water quality. Additionally, TIES has introduced sustainable solutions for weed and pest management by training farmers in organic and integrated pest management (IPM) techniques, promoting bio-pesticides, and researching eco-friendly alternatives to chemical inputs. Regular farmer meetings in key rice-producing districts—Kottayam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Thrissur—have provided a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building. Through these initiatives, TIES has strengthened local water infrastructure, improved irrigation systems, and helped farmers transition to sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring long-term food security and ecosystem health.
Your Support is Vital
As the demand for mechanized restoration and accessibility to safe farming resources grows, we face challenges in meeting these needs effectively. We seek the generous support of individuals and organizations committed to protecting freshwater ecosystems and ensuring the well-being of local communities. As Dr. M.S. Swaminathan once said, "If agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will have a chance to go right." Wetland paddy fields are not just food sources but also vital components of freshwater ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and acting as natural water reservoirs. By rejuvenating these landscapes, we are not only securing livelihoods but also safeguarding the ecological balance of Kerala’s riverine systems.
Your contributions will directly aid in revitalizing Kerala’s wetlands, securing sustainable food production, and safeguarding vital water resources. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
Thank you for your support!
