I want to share with you the words of Altamiran Ribeiro, an Afro-Brazilian activist with the Land Pastoral Commission, who has been fighting for the rights of rural communities and indigenous peoples in Brazil for 20 years:
 
"Our people are being forced out of our lands due to the investment in so-called ‘development,’ losing our rivers, and losing our culture.
 
"We should be shouting to the whole world that this land is ours, the nature is ours, and we are the true guardians of this nature. Our communities and our people simply want the right to exist, the right to live our own traditions and culture, and to stay on our own land."

Altamiran is supporting communities under attack by local land grabbers and foreign investors. Through your support, they're fighting back.

With your support, we welcomed Altamiran to the United States this month to raise his voice in the halls of power and build global solidarity. Together, we lifted up his communities’ demands for justice to Congress and the World Bank. We connected Altamiran with students, academics, and community organizers at college campuses including Howard University and Harvard University. We met with farmers in Mississippi around their communities’ common struggles with big agribusiness corporations who want to push them out. And he delivered his message to the pension fund TIAA, along with our petition of more than 38,000 signatures from supporters like you, calling on TIAA to stop land grabs in his community.

It’s moments like this – a grassroots activist from Brazil speaking truth to power and connecting with organizers in the U.S. – that ground me in what we fight for. This is how we create a more just world and become more united in our struggles.
