Do you know that 7 in 10 children do not complete primary school in Malawi? To change this, CharChar delivers an accelerated Literacy Programme, helping to reduce high drop-out rates in Primary School and providing a sustainable route out of poverty through education. With your help we will be able to expand our volunteer literacy teacher corps to reach over 6,000 underprivileged primary school-age children in Malawi and reverse the negative impacts of COVID-19. Education cannot wait!
In rural Malawi classes are over-crowded and under-resourced, with 130 students on average per teacher. Completing primary school does not guarantee literacy. Over 70% emerge illiterate - unable to read a single sentence of a short story. Indeed, the lack of resources and shortages of qualified teachers often result in high drop-out rates. In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, the situation has worsened - almost six million school age children in Malawi are not receiving any lessons.
We train newly qualified Malawian primary teachers to deliver the accelerated CharChar Literacy programme, focused on active, child-centred teaching, and making learning fun and memorable to complement the Malawi Government's English curriculum. Now, to fight back against COVID-19 and help children recover from the 'learning loss', we need your support to train 42 volunteer literacy teachers and increase the reach of our programme to 6,000 children.
We'll increase literacy levels by building strong curriculums and producing qualified teachers, and by scaling our literacy work to 5,700 schools throughout the country. Your support will change the lives of children in Malawi. Investing in children's education will ensure they stay protected, in school and out of poverty, benefiting from the value of literacy and reaching their full potential. We're a small organisation, but we have a strong footprint in Malawi. Let's not leave any child behind
