This holiday season, at Ipas we are feeling grateful that globally, reproductive justice is spreading, and that more women and girls around the world have greater control of their lives and their futures.
We are grateful for feminist movements like the Green Wave in Latin America that is making historic changes on abortion rights, spreading through Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and other countries in the region.
We are grateful for our colleagues around the world—knowing that at Ipas we’re part of a global network of people on five continents with a shared passion and commitment to reproductive justice. That is heartening and inspiring.
We are grateful for our community of donors, who make our work sustainable, and make our organization one that can both withstand long-term systems change work, and respond nimbly to emerging needs.
And while we are grateful for these things and more, we also sit with grief for the rights and freedoms women in the United States have been stripped of. The over-turning of Roe v. Wade and the tightening of abortion restrictions across the country continues to have devastating consequences for real women and their families.
At Ipas, we are taking this grief and turning it into action by using what we have learned in our five decades of work in 20 countries changing lives, and bringing that knowledge to the United States.
Our advocacy team is working to reclaim reproductive rights by codifying them into state and federal law. In 2024, we are bringing together advocates across geographies to build global solidarity and strategize together.
We are increasing the reach and resiliency of self-managed abortion accompaniment networks, a model of care that involves training community members to be available for women who need support and guidance on ending a pregnancy.
We are launching an interactive map that identifies points of sale for misoprostol along the Texas/Mexico border. It will include information about the drug, its cost, and whether a prescription is required. This map is the result of a major research project in different territories of the country. We are also training medical providers, including emergency room personnel and OBGYNs, on Post-Abortion Care (PAC), on preventing abortion criminalization, and on understanding the exceptions to Texas abortion restrictions.
We are doing this work and much more with an incredible group of partners and collaborators, and we hope you will join us.
Will you help us expand access to abortion in the U.S.?
Wishing you the best this season,
Chandra
