Tabitha Home Tenth Year Anniversary Celebration

Tabitha Maison Foundation (Tabitha Home) is a non-profit organization focused on providing care and support for orphans and vulnerable children. With a mission to "Inspire Hope for Vulnerable Children," our work centers on Child Development, Social Integration, and Sustainable Entrepreneurship, extending services to both residential and non-residential children in the community.

Guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we offer a range of support, including therapy, life skills training, and six essential services: Nutrition, Shelter, Education, Medical Care, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, and Life Skills. We also enforce strict adherence to Child Rights Law, Safeguarding, and Health and Safety Policies to protect all beneficiaries, staff, and visitors.

This report outlines the goals achieved from June to September 2024. Each month, children engage with a specific theme guiding in-house projects, helping them develop coping mechanisms, psychological resilience, and social skills. The monthly themes included Discipline (June), Sincerity (July), Fear and Anxiety (August), and Procrastination (September).

PROJECT PROGRESS

RESIDENTIAL BENEFICIARIES

Tabitha Home currently supports 58 beneficiaries, comprising:39 female children 19 male children. Notably, 14 older children continue to receive comprehensive support, including: Educational assistance, Psychosocial support, Economic strengthening. This ensures their ongoing development and well-being.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  •  Our children's academic performance was excellent, as reflected in their report cards.
  • Seven children received prizes for ranking among the top three in their classes during the promotional exams held in July.
  • Three children received awards from the Asido Foundation for their participation in the 5th edition of the Asido Kids Challenge, focused on "How I Balance My Screen Time and Stay Happy."
  • Four children graduated from primary school, and three graduated from secondary school.
  • One of our children gained admission into the university in August, 2024 to study Economics.
  • Four of our children from Victory Nursery & Primary School were given award of excellence by Africa Mathematics Project for their outstanding and exceptional performance in Mathematics.

 

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT

Throughout June, July, August and September 2024, the children received three balanced meals daily, along with mid-day snacks, ensuring they obtained essential nutrients for healthy growth and development. Their nutrition was further supported with regular vitamin supplements and cod liver oil to promote overall well-being.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT

Tabitha Home remains committed to fostering the children’s intellectual and personal growth. Our beneficiaries attend five schools: FADAFAP School, Joyce B, Rochas Foundation College, Oke Ado Baptist School, Victory Nursery & Primary School (Ibadan), and Dansol High School (Lagos).

In June, four Primary 5 students from Victory Nursery & Primary School and FADAFAP School sat for their State Common Entrance examination achieving scores of 76%, 73%, 56%, and 73%. Additionally, three children sat for the NECO exams, and one began SAT preparation at JSAY Prevarsity.

In July, all children took their promotional exams, while three others graduated from primary school, three from junior secondary, and three from senior secondary. Seven children received academic awards. Five children who wrote West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations had outstanding results; they are currently awaiting university admission. Meanwhile, three of our beneficiaries attending University of Ilorin, Olabisi Onabanjo University, and Osun State University completed their second-semester examinations in August and returned home for holiday.

Supplementary lessons were conducted at the home by four visiting teachers, and the children had access to a well-stocked library. Staff organized engaging educational activities during the holidays to ensure continued learning.

MEDICAL SUPPORT

The home prioritizes children's health by maintaining a well-stocked First Aid Box and ensuring prompt medical care through partnerships with University College Hospital and The Vine Hospital. In August, the children were registered under the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme (OYSHIA) via the Child Welfare Department of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, securing access to emergency healthcare. Also, during the vacation, children and staff received CPR training, reinforcing the home’s commitment to a safe and healthy environment.

PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

The home provides consistent psychosocial support through activities like key working, Kids Club, group therapy, and outdoor social programs. These initiatives promote emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and personal growth, enabling the children to recognize their strengths, overcome challenges, and build resilience. This holistic approach helps them develop into confident, well-rounded individuals, prepared for future success.

SKILL ACQUISITION

In line with our focus on sustainable entrepreneurship, Tabitha Home partnered with 25th Network, a non-profit organization that empowers teenagers across Africa through skill acquisition. They conducted hands-on sessions for the children on tie and dye, basic fashion design, and gift box making. The experience provided valuable, practical skills and engaged the children in meaningful learning activities.

MEDICAL OUTREACH

In the month of September, representatives from the Department of Periodontology and Community Dentistry, University of Ibadan, visited Tabitha Home as part of their project “Gumshield: Gums Health Intervention for Long-Term Dental Health.” They performed dental check-ups and cleanings for children aged 10 and above, offering advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques to maintain oral health.

STAFF TRAINING

On the 16th of September 2024, Tabitha Home held a staff training session led by the Executive Director, Project Coordinator, and Home Therapist. The session covered key topics such as rebranding, effective communication, office dynamics, and emotional intelligence. The training aimed to enhance professional development and improve overall operations at the home.

AFRICA MATHEMATICS PROJECT

In the month of June, four of our children from Victory Nursery & Primary School were given award of excellence by Africa Mathematics Project for their outstanding and exceptional performance in Mathematics. They were dubbed Mathematics Ambassadors.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD

Tabitha Home celebrated the International Day of the African Child on the 16th of June, 2024 with the theme "Education for Children in Africa: The Time is Now." The children participated in group presentations of poems, songs, and dramas, with each group receiving gifts for their efforts. A quiz competition and career guidance session also took place, making the event both educational and enjoyable. Additionally, a staff member attended a Zoom meeting organized by CPN to discuss challenges affecting children's education, including the issue of out-of-school children.

ASIDO KIDS CHALLENGE

Three children from Tabitha Home were recognized by the Asido Foundation as top 10 participants in the 5th edition of the Asido Kids Challenge, which focused on “How I Balance my Screen Time and Stay Happy.” They were awarded certificates on June 28th, 2024.

CPR TRAINING

In July, Red Cross personnel provided CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) training for both staff and children at Tabitha Home. The training covered the DR ABC steps—checking responsiveness, airway, breathing, and chest compressions—along with first aid procedures for choking, bleeding, fainting, and fractures.

 

SOCIAL INTEGRATION

YOUNG ECCLESIA NATION SUMMER CAMP

Five children from Tabitha Home participated in the YEN summer camp held from July 21-24, 2024, at Redeem Campground, Lagos. Themed "Awakening Spirit," the camp emphasized spiritual growth and personal development through prayer sessions, sports, and learning modules on emotional intelligence, the supernatural, and success in Christ. This transformative experience equipped the children with essential life skills and values.

THE PANACHE SUMMER DAY CAMP

Five Tabitha Home children attended the Panache Summer Day Camp, themed "Be Regimented: Getting it Right," which focused on personal development, practical skills, and fun activities over two weeks. The camp emphasized self-discovery, time management, and body management, helping the children develop crucial life skills such as self-awareness, discipline, and confidence. Hands-on activities like cake baking, cooking, tie and dye, home management, and career planning allowed the children to explore their creativity and broaden their career perspectives. Two exceptional children received the titles of Mr. and Miss Panache, highlighting their outstanding participation and conduct.

GYM INITIATIVE CONFERENCE

On the 27th of July, children from Tabitha Home attended the annual GYM (Great Young Minds) Initiative conference titled "Kings and Priests" at RCCG Covenant Tabernacle, Orita Challenge, Ibadan. This fifth edition of the conference aimed to inspire young minds to love God and develop a Christ-conscious mindset. The children actively participated in songs and dance, and the conference featured spoken word performances, prayer sessions, and teachings on becoming kings and priests in their lives.

EMPOWERING YOUTH: THE ASIDO FOUNDATION'S ADOLESCENT BOOTCAMP

From August 12th to 14th, two children from Tabitha Home participated in the Asido Foundation's Adolescent Bootcamp, focusing on mental health and emotional intelligence. The interactive sessions and workshops provided essential life skills and strategies for managing emotions during adolescence.

BOYS HANGOUT

On August 17th, the Agape Love Foundation hosted a Boys Hangout, where four Tabitha Home boys connected with peers from diverse backgrounds. This picnic-style gathering encouraged discussions centered around biblical characters and their virtues, allowing the boys to gain valuable insights from the challenges and triumphs of these role models.

LOVEWALK PROJECT

The Lovewalk Project took place on August 24th, with the theme "DOMINATE." Accompanied by the Home Administrator, Tabitha Home children engaged in biblical teachings that focused on taking control of their lives and overcoming peer pressure. The event included interactive games, sing-alongs, and a spelling bee, adding fun to the program.

GLOBAL HARVEST CHURCH

On September 21st, five teenagers from Tabitha Home attended a teens program at Global Harvest Church, themed “Empowering Excellence in Your Body, Mind, and Soul.” They learned effective communication skills, strategies for academic excellence, and ways to manage emotional stress. The program concluded with food, drinks, and gift packages, and the attendees shared they learnt with the other children back at the home.

BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Temitayo Awosika Foundation, in partnership with the Ibadan Sickle Cell Foundation, organized a back-to-school program where Tabitha Home was invited to be part of the beneficiaries. The event educated the children about sickle cell disease, including nutrition and patient support. Sponsored by Access Bank, the children received back-to-school items such as bags, books, pens, and mathematical sets.

OUTPOUR OF FRAGRANCE

On the 3rd of August, 2024, some children from Tabitha Home attended the “Children Praise and Pray” program organized by Outpour of Fragrance Initiative at All Saints Church School, Jericho. The event provided a spiritual and uplifting experience, allowing the children to engage in worship, prayer, and fellowship. They also showcased their talents with heartfelt performances, including songs and dance.

 

SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

KIDS CLUB

The Kids Club program fosters holistic growth by merging learning with play. June throough September, children have engaged in mentally stimulating activities every Friday at 4 PM, focusing on character-building through diverse themes. The themes included:

  • June: Discipline emphasized focus, hard work, and obedience, inspired by Tunde Onakoya's Guinness World Record story.
  • July: A movie night featuring Saving The Saints taught the importance of speaking up against abuse and holding onto faith.
  • August: Focused on Emotional Intelligence, overcoming fear and anxiety, complemented by recreational games such as scrabble and chess.
  • September: Emphasized the benefits of perseverance, using Michael Jordan as a case study.

There were educative and role playing sessions and the children were given different tasks to express their understanding on the topic. This also created a platform for the children to showcase their talents. The children also had opportunity to play various board games such as chess, scrabble and Ludo. Kids Club promotes critical thinking, strategy, and essential life skills, empowering children to navigate challenges and build strong moral foundations.

MOVIE NIGHTS

Movie nights are held every Friday at 7:00 PM, occasionally extending to Saturdays, providing children with a relaxing transition into the weekend while unwinding from their weekly academic activities.

READING CULTURE

This in-house activity sharpens vocabulary and fosters a love for reading. Coordinated by the children and supervised by the Assistant Home Administrator, the reading sessions were held every Monday in June and every Thursday from July through September. The children read Leadership Gold by Norman Vincent Peale, learning valuable lessons about perseverance, friendship, and personal growth. They discovered that success requires sacrifice, discipline, and focus, and they appreciated the importance of investing in personal development.

PASS IT ON PROJECT

This initiative promotes leadership skills among the children by pairing older children with younger ones to pass on knowledge and skills in personal development and academic excellence. This program has fostered a sense of belonging and has resulted in notable educational, physical, psychological, and mental growth.

MUSICAL CLASS

In August, a representative from City Gate Foundation Musical Academy conducted musical training sessions to nurture the children's singing abilities and build their confidence. A music/video production resulting from this collaboration was released in September.

INTERNSHIP

In August, Janet Ojo and Oyegbami Blessed returned from their second semester examinations. Currently, they are engaged in internships: Janet at Fodnab Ventures, gaining experience in the printing industry, and Blessed at Prime Solicitors, acquiring knowledge in the legal field. Their internships are set to last three months, offering valuable exposure and skills.

GET READY FOR UNIVERSITY PROGRAM

Launched in August, this program prepares children for university life. They receive valuable teachings from a social worker, guidance counsellor and other member of staff on essential topics such as understanding courses, significance of course units, and calculating their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Sessions occur every two weeks.

ICT TRAINING

The Mother and Girl-Child Protection Initiative (MAGI) began a three-month vocational training that includes ICT. One child from Tabitha Home is participating and has learned about Artificial Intelligence, as well as Microsoft Word and Excel.

FRENCH LESSONS

A volunteer French teacher introduced the children to the basics of the French language. They covered fundamental topics like numbers, greetings, classroom objects, and even composed simple writings about themselves. The children also learned to sing birthday and friendship songs in French, laying a solid foundation in the language.

TABITHA HOME: TEN YEARS OF TRANSFORMING LIVES

August marked a significant milestone as Tabitha Home celebrated her 10th anniversary with a series of events highlighting her commitment to providing love and support.

  • The celebrations began on August 12th with a documentary shoot reflecting on the home's journey over the past decade.
  • A praise evening on August 18th filled the atmosphere with joy, followed by a fun outing to Shoprite on August 19th.
  • The pinnacle of the celebrations was a heartfelt thanksgiving service at New Covenant Church on August 25th, acknowledging the home’s achievements.
  • The festivities culminated in a vibrant house party, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

 

NON-RESIDENTIAL BENEFICIARIES

PROJECT CLEAN WATER

In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal No. 6, Tabitha Home provided clean water to the community in Ibadan. Water was supplied three times a week, significantly benefiting local residents and enhancing sanitation. This initiative was greatly appreciated by the community.

GIRLS TECH 1.4

Tabitha Home, in collaboration with Help Initiative, organized the fourth edition of the Girls Tech project, inspired by the 2021 International Day of the Girl Child theme, “Digital Generation, Our Generation.” This initiative aims to equip young girls in various care homes with essential ICT skills.
 The Girls Tech 1.4 program took place at Expert Education Center, Akinyele, MKO Abiola Way, Ibadan, from August 14th to September 3rd, with a total of 22 girls participating: 6 from Tabitha Home, 12 from Jesus Care Mission Home, and 4 from Kent Home. This year’s curriculum focused on coding, where the girls were introduced to various programming languages, including HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) for web page creation, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for designing website visuals, and Data Analysis for interpreting and analyzing data effectively. The program included facilitators from Expert Education Center, staff from Tabitha Home, and volunteers.

A PAD A GIRL PROJECT

In June, Help Initiative partnered with Tabitha Home to execute the Pad A Girl Project, aimed at educating young girls about menstrual hygiene, sexual reproductive health, female genital mutilation (FGM), and related topics. This initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Slum and Rural Health Initiative Network, which provided guest speakers.
 The project was conducted at two schools:

  • June 26: At Baptist Secondary School in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, with 224 female students from JSS1 to JSS3 attending.
  • June 27: At Oke-Ado Comprehensive College, Ibadan, with 63 female students from JSS1 to SSS2.

Facilitators covered topics such as menstruation and menstrual hygiene, proper use of sanitary pads, menstrual cycle calculation, sexual purity, abstinence, and the implications of FGM. Each session was followed by a question-and-answer segment, allowing students to engage and clarify doubts. At the end of the program, each female student and their teachers received sanitary pads. Staff from Tabitha Home and volunteers assisted in organizing the event.
