INTRODUCTION
Tabitha Maison Foundation (Tabitha Home) is a non-profit organization committed to “Inspiring Hope for Vulnerable Children.” Tabitha Home has a facility for orphans and vulnerable children with the strategic priorities of Child Development, Social Integration and Sustainable Entrepreneurship. Tabitha Home also runs project for residential and non-residential children in the community. In accomplishing our vision and mission, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has provided us with the pathway of administering support to our beneficiaries. In addition, Tabitha Home continues to ensure strict implementation of Child Right Law, Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Health and Safety Policy to protect the children, staff and visitors.
This report covers the goals attained within the month of January through May 2024.
PROJECT PROGRESS
RESIDENTIAL BENEFICIARIES
The home presently has 56 beneficiaries; 38 female and 18 male children, which includes 8 older children who are still benefitting from educational support, psychosocial support and economic strengthening.
AWARDS
NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT
The children were given three square meals with mid-day snacks. The management ensured that each of the meal was well balanced with all needed nutrients for the children. This is accompanied with vitamins and fruits to aid adequate growth and development.
INVERTER INSTALLATION PROJECT
At the commencement of the year, an inverter was procured and installed within the premises, this was generously provided by a benefactor who spearheaded the fundraising efforts for its acquisition. The inverter has been supplying light and essential power since its installation. However, there remains a need for the acquisition of solar panels to complement the functionality of the inverter system.
EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT
Tabitha Home ensured access to quality education for its beneficiaries through partnerships with reputable institutions, providing tuition discounts at schools such as Victory Nursery and Primary School, Victory High School, Oke Ado Baptist Schools, FADAFAP Schools, Dansol High School, and Rochas Foundation College. Private tutors were employed to offer extra lessons to children on weekends and holidays, and those who needs additional lessons in mathematics.
Tabitha Home children actively participated in their school’s inter-house sport competition. Some of them won medals for their houses. FADAFAP Schools hosted a career day, allowing children including Tabitha Home beneficiaries to represent various professions and gain insights into diverse career paths.
Tabitha Home children completed their 2nd term in the month of April 2024. Their results in general ranged from above average to excellent, however, there’s room for improvement in specific subjects.
During the school break, the children utilized the library, engaged in the pass-it-on project, and received additional lessons from private tutors. One child from Dansol High School completed a 10-day internship during school break. Those not yet admitted to university attended extra lessons to prepare for JAMB, WAEC, NECO, and SAT exams. A Tabitha Home beneficiary awaiting university admission scored 1290/1600 on the SAT. Seven children wrote the JAMB examination, scoring between 228 and 290.
SUSTAINABLE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
During the holidays and on weekends the children were fully involved in skill acquisition programme which includes; Knitting Classes, ICT class, Barbing and Hair Making. As at May, 2024, we have 9 (nine) girls that can make beautiful hairstyles and they do this on a weekly basis for other girls in the Home. Three (3) boys can cut hair and four (4) children are skilled in making confectioneries.
MEDICAL SUPPORT
First Aid Box was restocked in the month of March and it serves as an immediate help for medical cases. Tabitha Home also works with professionals at Chilad Pharmacy, University College Hospital and De Vine Hospital for treatment or emergency cases. However, during the period of this report, there was no casualty.
PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT
Activities of the home like pep talk, kids club, reading culture, key-working are forms of art and group therapy to transform and give the children the opportunity to explore their thoughts, feelings and patterns of behavior. These sessions discuss trending topics that inspire the children to share their opinions, and also share and work on their strengths and weaknesses. These sessions were anchored by a staff member external experts and professionals were also brought in to further help the children when needed.Top of Form
MEDICAL OUTREACH
In March, the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology from University College Hospital, University of Ibadan, conducted a medical outreach at Tabitha Home. They performed free intestinal parasite and malaria parasite tests for the children, collecting blood and feces samples. All test results were negative, confirming that the children are in good health.
In May, the Oyo State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), organized a free tuberculosis screening and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) testing for all children living in care homes. Children from Tabitha Home participated in the screening, and the results for the Tabitha Home children were negative for both tuberculosis and HIV.
SOCIAL INTEGRATION
NIGERIAN CHILDREN’S DAY PARTY
In commemoration of the year 2024 Nigerian Children’s Day celebration, the children were opportune to attend several children’s day event. First was a children’s day party organized by Destiny Trust at Agodi Garden on the 25th of May, 2024. Second was the children day celebration done in the church the children attend, New Covenant Church, Ring Road. Third was the children day party organized by the Association of Orphanage Homes in Nigeria (ASOHON) held at the Ministry of Women Affairs Hall, Samonda, Ibadan. Last but not the least, some of the children represented ASOHON at the children day celebration organized by the Oyo state government, where the children took part in the March Past. The event was held at the Adamasingba Stadium. All event was exciting and they created memorable experience for the children. Finally, the home had an in house party to celebrate the children’s day, there was sumptuous meal, drinks, and cake sponsored by donors.
CONFERENCE: NIGERIAN MILLENNIALS TECHNOLOGY IGNITED CONFERENCE
In the month of April, Nigerian Millennials Technology Ignited hosted a conference at the International Conferenced Centre, University of Ibadan where a few of the children with a staff attended. The conference was about embracing the transformative power of technology and innovation, aimed at sculpting a brighter future for Nigeria. The children were exposed to the various areas of technology such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, software development, technology in agriculture and lots more.
SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
MOVIE NIGHTS
At Tabitha Home, movie nights are held every Friday at 7:00 PM, occasionally extending to Saturdays. This tradition helps children unwind from their weekly academic activities and transition into the weekend, except during examination periods.
KIDS CLUB
Kids Club is an in-house activity where the children learn through play, games and talks. From January through May, activities that centered around Tolerance, Peace Making, and the Fruits of the Spirit. There were educative and role playing sessions and the children were given different tasks to express their understanding on the topic. This also created a platform for the children to showcase their talents. The children also had opportunity to play various board games such as chess, scrabble and Ludo.
READING CULTURE
This in-house activity provided a platform for the children to sharpen their vocabulary, learn new words, and develop a love for reading. It was held every Monday, the project was coordinated by the children and supervised by the Home administrator. The children read and studied the book titled ‘Leadership Gold’ by Norman Vincent Peale. They were able to cover chapter 16 through 21. They learnt the importance of learning from past experiences and examining them strategically, which is useful for decision-making. The book also explored the profound concept of the power of choice. The children gained invaluable lessons on the significance of setting high standards, striving to be the best version of themselves, and fulfilling their utmost potential.
NON-RESIDENTIAL BENEFICIARIES
SCHOOL ADVOCACY VISIT
Tabitha Home's conducted an Anti-Bullying Campaign in response to increasing reports of bullying in Nigerian schools. The project engaged 166 students aged 4-18 from primary and secondary schools, focusing on education, awareness, and promoting zero tolerance for bullying. The campaign successfully raised awareness and fostered a positive response among participants.
PROJECT CLEAN WATER
Tabitha Home, in line with SDG No. 6, provided clean water to its community in Ibadan. Water was supplied three times a week, significantly benefiting local residents and improving sanitation. The community greatly appreciated this initiative.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In the month of February, the home in partnership with Help Initiative reached out to over 150 needy children giving them food, drinks, snacks, slippers and clothing.
