By Van An | Project officer

On 23 August 2019, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Research Center for Management and Sustainable Development (MSD) in collaboration with the Department of Justice of Ho Chi Minh City organized the launching workshop of the "New life page" Project - Promoting the right to birth registration for disadvantaged children in Ho Chi Minh City during the period of June 2019 - May 2020. The launching workshop kicked off a series of forthcoming activities aimed at connecting stakeholders in supporting underprivileged children, including direct financial and technical assistance for 130 disadvantaged children to be granted a birth certificate in Ho Chi Minh City. The workshop was also an opportunity for stakeholders to better understand the process of issuing a birth certificate and the importance of a birth certificate to their lives.

The "New life page" Project has been implemented by MSD since 2014 and has supported 45 disadvantaged children in Ho Chi Minh City. In the period of June 2019 - May 2020, the project is implemented with the coordination of the Department of Justice of Ho Chi Minh City and its stakeholders.

The participants of the workshop include representatives from MSD, Department of Justice of Ho Chi Minh City, Department of Labor - Invalids and Social City of Ho Chi Minh City, Legal Aid Center of Ho Chi Minh City, other district departments, many immigrant families, children without birth certificates, representatives of social organizations, shelters, open houses, some families whose have been supported to get birth certificates and other identification documents.

The  "New life page" project aims to increase access to birth certificates for disadvantaged children in Ho Chi Minh City through:

(1) Raising awareness and capacity of social organizations and communities on the children's rights of birth certificates for and how to exercise their rights in accordance with Vietnamese laws.

(2) Increasing access to counseling, legal support services for disadvantaged children, and support about 130 disadvantaged children in making birth certificates.

A representative from MSD stated: “The involvement of stakeholders including the involvement of authorities, parents and caregivers, social organizations, the community and the children themselves is extremely important in the process of realizing birth rights for children. In order to reach the goal of supporting 130 children in the project and hundreds, maybe thousands of children are still missing documents, we call for the support of stakeholders, helping them not to become "Invisible" and have a chance to approach a brighter future".
