Chamos' Healthy Communities Programme: A Holistic Approach to Health in Rural Venezuela
Over the past two years, Chamos has focused on holistic health interventions for rural, low-income communities in Venezuela.
As 2023 came to a close, so did our third visit to La Marroquina in Yaracuy - home to around 800 families. In 18 months, we facilitated three health clinics with voluntary doctors, dentists, and medical students from Proyecto Mayú, addressing parasitosis and water-borne illnesses, high blood pressure, malnourishment, cavities, and gum infections.
Beyond medical and dental consultations, we implemented a Clean Water Programme, purifying water in the community well, tanks, and pipes. Water filtration systems were installed in the local school and select households, ensuring access to clean water. We also facilitated workshops on various health topics to empower the community with knowledge needed to maintain their well-being throughout the year.
Thanks to your support, we have provided healthcare to an incredible 1,387 people!
So far, we have seen a five percent decrease in illnesses caused by parasites, and a seven percent decrease of children at risk of malnutrition. A positive outcome of 60 percent of patients monitored for hypertension have now successfully achieved and continue to maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
What’s more, we have provided 396 dental fillings to prevent cavities and tooth decay, and over this period we saw a five percent reduction in cavities among children. Overall, there has been remarkable progress in oral hygiene practices, with 87 percent of adults and 48 percent of children in our consultations reporting that they now brush their teeth at least twice a day!
We couldn’t have done any of this without your generosity and support in our health work. Thank you!
