This project will build a new toilet for school girls at Mwamagunguli "A" primary School in Shinyanga Municipal including handwashing facility and a room of toilet for children Physical challenges. It will serve185 girls while the handwashing facility will serve a total of 387 children(Girls and Boys). This project will increase the ratio from 1 room per 185 girls to 1 room per 27 girls which is close to the WHO standard. All 185 school girls are using one toilet room currently.
When a girl reaches puberty, access to a separate toilet can be the decisive factor of whether she continues with her education. For girls, being able to change and dispose of sanitary pads and wash their hands in a single-sex space is crucial in encouraging them to attend school. Without this, girls may miss up to 5 days of school every month or worse, drop out of school completely. Mwamagunguli A Primary School is proposing this project because there is only one toilet for girls.
The project will solve the following problems: Students will stay in classes during class hours unlike to practice open defecation (a risk in itself), as they are unable to attend the toilets during break times due to long lines; Girls will be safe and clean enough (especially during their period) and there will be privacy (the walls between the toilets); A practically hand-washing facility for fighting against COVID 19 or other related diseases Improve the general performance of Girls in school
We know from our experience that children are powerful agents of change in their societies. They are open to new ideas and are more likely to want an improved sanitation facility. Their actions and influence on their families determine the trajectory of sanitation and hygiene improvements. Through the awareness activity and by making WASH a priority topic, TAI foresee the improvement of sanitation in the community and country at large. We aims to generate and catalyze this movement.
