A Different Approach provides context-relevant mentoring to First Nation students enrolled in boarder town schools with a majority of non-native populations. The program provides access to opportunities and guidance for Native youth by tribal volunteers and stipended mentors. The services include life planning and coping skills relevant to the context of reservation life.
This Spring, Rochella Lacappa mentored four White Mountain Apache teenagers in a weekly program over five months. The students learned professional life skills for work in tribal and nontribal environments, goal setting and life strategies on and off the reservation, and experience with working in the tribal community in terms of organizational dynamics, procedures, and social capital.
The results of this intensive mentorship was a successful week-long youth camp designed by the interns and implemented by volunteers. To the joy of the parents, each of the participants excelled in job interviews and completed summer jobs. One of the participants even landed a position in the tribal chairperson's office and represented the tribe in an official capacity in a government meeting.
We appreciate the contributions that make a difference in the lives of these young adults today. We expect that they will be influential change agents in the future.
