Summary

On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread devastation. Among those affected are Buddhist monks and nuns living in Mandalay, located just 20 miles from the epicenter. The earthquake severely damaged their living quarters, leaving them without access to necessities such as food, clean water, medical supplies, and essential hygiene items. These monastics are in urgent need of humanitarian aid to ensure their daily lives during this critical period.

Challenge

The death toll from a huge earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand has surpassed 1,600, and more than 3,400 were injured, with at least 139 people still missing under the rubble in Myanmar. Humanitarian operations in Myanmar have been badly hindered by damaged roads, the collapse of critical infrastructure, and the destruction of major bridges. The basic supplies, such as food, shelter, clean water, and medical assistance, are crucially needed at the moment.

Solution

Relief Fund for Myanmar Monastics After Earthquake provides food, clean water, temporary shelters, and medical supplies for Buddhist monks and nuns living in Mandalay, located just 20 miles from the epicenter. The donations will go directly to the monastics through the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB).

Long-Term Impact

While the immediate priority is to provide emergency relief, this initiative will also help the monastics regain stability and prepare for the rebuilding process. Proper nutrition and medical care will allow them to stay strong physically and mentally as they navigate the next phase of recovery. Additionally, access to clean water, mosquito nets, and hygiene supplies will prevent long-term health complications, ensuring they can continue their spiritual and community-based work.
