Challenge

Cataract a treatable condition affects about 80% of the over 5 Million living with blindness in Nigeria. The lack of facilities, trained personnel and resources is a major challenge to eye care. Government assistance is minimal as most of the resources allocated to health care delivery are channeled towards HIV and Malaria campaigns. This project will bring hope to the largely poor and disadvantaged persons living with this condition and ensure that affected children return to school.

Solution

This project will provide free cataract surgery and preventive eye care to 250 beneficiaries every quarter. Treated adults will be able to resume gainful employment and children will return back to school. The project will train local personnel in the practice of prevention of avoidable causes and ensure adequate public enlightenment programs are initiated to sensitize the community.

Long-Term Impact

This project will treat 250 individuals with cataract. The adults will be able to get back to gainful employment and provide for their families, children will be able to return to school. The awareness program will ensure that members of the community are better informed about preventive measures and personal hygiene.
