Kids, teenagers and young adults have over recent years displayed suicidal behaviour due to the economic decline in "Sunny" Greece HEALTH 50% of the public hospitals & health centers have shut down EDUCATION Half of successful students drop out of studies since 41 out of 48 dormitories have closed CARRIER No hope for jobs FAMILY Disruption of family life and social isolation HUG stands alone for curing self-harming problems and will also aim to offer a roof for students in need.
The financial crisis seems to evolve into genocidal phenomena. Living below the poverty line with no access to mental health services, being excluded from higher education & having no job prospects have led many young people to feel excluded from life. Choosing to hurt themselves & commit suicide is the strongest cry of despair: 1/5 of adolescents exert non fatal, self-harm behaviours against themselves (Kokkevi et al 2011) while 2 people attempt suicide and at least 1 succeeds daily in Greece.
H.U.G. initiates in GR & the UK, aiming to support children & youth in terms of life protection & mental health rehabilitation. H.U.G. action planning:1.Meet with the municipality of Athens/ministries/institutional bodies for taking emergency measures 2.Implement a sensitization campaign against self-harm 3.Initiate the operation of student accommodations in Ath 4.Conduct research on self-harm screening on youth aged 15-25 5. Operate the "Cafe des Femmes" community centre - women of culture
H.U.G.'s operation can work as a remedy against the violence and panic caused by the sudden rise of young people's tendency to self-harm & exhibit suicidal behaviours. Society & government have not developed neither a strategy or plan to solve the problem. H.U.G. is not just an alternative, but the only solution the country can currently provide. United with you we can embrace children and young people to stop self-harming themselves and focus on positive outcomes
