Summary

250 Kenyan families, whose livelihoods have recently been threatened recurrently due to long periods of drought, will be provided with access to water and drinking water through this project. This will be achieved by building a well and constructing a system for filtering the water into clean drinking water on the compound of St. Monica Village, a cooperative for widows in Western Kenya. The project thus makes a crucial contribution to securing the livelihoods of these families.

Challenge

Triggered by climate change, Kenya has been suffering from prolonged periods of drought during the past years. As a result, the prices for food and water increase which severely threatens the livelihoods of many people, especially those in most vulnerable positions. Those who already struggle to sustain their livelihoods and provide for their children are barely able to survive during such times.

Solution

The project will entail building a well on the compound that belongs to the cooperative St. Monica Village. This will provide the widows and their families with easy access to water, throughout the year, even during periods of drought. With the support of DfA, the widows have been able to purchase a water filter, which will be integrated into a construction that will enable the widows to convert the water from the well into clean drinking water.

Long-Term Impact

250 Kenyan widows and their families will have access to clean drinking water throughout the year. The project will provide the tools necessary to achieve sustainable and healthy livelihoods. Easily accessible, clean drinking water will be available to them continuously. Having access to large quantities of water will enable the widows to water their garden on the compound of the cooperative, which will maintain sustainable food sources, even during periods of drought.
